The best samurai. That is a good question. I would have to say Kambei, if forced to choose, though they all had qualities that made the entire unit great. Kambei was humble, fierce, a good leader, and compassionate.

Ironically, perhaps, they were all lost souls. They were also lost in some sense because they were bad samurai. They had all lost wars or faked their own identity or were too focused to be true samurai. The ironic part of all this, I feel, was that they were all somewhat failures as samurai because they did not like war and they lacked ambition to be "great", all the qualities which led them to die in the service of peasants, unsung and unappreciated, qualities we would all hope truly great men would possess if given swords and given the task of fightning and defending our homes and lives.
