Years ago I taught high school Biology and made sure that my students knew how conception occurred. I know that who I am physically is the result of a combination of genes from each of my parents. As humans, however, most of us recognize that there is a non-physical part of each of us. As a Christian, I believe that non-physical part of me was created by God at the time of my conception.
When God created me, God had a "dream" about the person I might become since God provided me with a unique combination of gifts, talents, and skills. As I go through my life I continue to discover who I am and the gifts, talents, and skills I've been given and which continue to emerge in me. With that discovery, I attempt to live my life the way God has "dreamt."
My understanding of God's "dream" for me is my vocation. It is what God calls me to. My life's quest is to fulfill that dream, to answer that call.
What does that call include? Is it what I do or the person I am. To both, I answer, "Yes!" Doing and being are both aspects of my vocation.
