I really don't think it changes the sound. If I can plug the vent hole while playing around with drums in the music store, I will. So far I've never heard a difference. Some say they can, and some agree with me. Ronn Dunnett, maker of beautiful wood, steel, ti, alum........ drums says it's a throwback from calf-haed days (moisture control). I thought that was a good explenation, so I've used it ever since. So, if you like the sound of your toms and bass, I would say to stop there (that's if you haven't already done it 20 days or so since you asked).
