Sahana stopped
The pain had ceased
And beside her wet side
Was a little wet beast
“Brown bag of bones…
I wish it were still dead!”
Sahana cursed while placing
Her sharp hoof next to its small head
But she hesitated and watched
As it looked for milk
No, that might get blood
On her coat of silk
So she cut a deep gash
Across his white star
Filling his head with blindness
And forever leaving a scar
In hours it was walking
It still needed a name
With a scowl up her lips
She called him ‘Shame’
It was time to walk
The sun started to fall
Maybe getting rid of Shame
Wouldn’t be so hard after all
They walked into the trees
Until there was no light
It was her and the foal
Alone in the night
She turned and whispered
“Stay here, little one..
And when Mommy gets back,
We’ll do something fun!”
The colt sat and waited
Eyes all a glow
What Mommy would bring
He did not know
Sahana turned and cantered;
She felt no guilt
All for the callus
Her heart had built
His eyes bled rivers
And Shame began to cry
He was alone.. and hungry..
Left to die
