Tammy (& Bob)

What's a tarpon? (Just kidding, I saw some on TV once). Anyway, let me add that flyfishermen totally underrate bass as worthy subjects for flyfishing, & bass fishermen underrate flyfishing as a method for bass fishing. Granted it may not be the most efficient method for winning a bass tournament, but it's a great way to go after a great gamefish.

Most of my experience has been with smallmouth in rivers in Virginia, like the Rappahannock and Potomac, and they are a great fish on a fly rod. I just took an 18" smallmouth out of a small stream near my home here in California, much to the chagrin & amazement of all the baitfishing campers sitting drinking their coffee waiting to get their boats ready.

I've read many old articles (1900's to 1930's) extolling the wonders of flyfishing for bass in Florida. It seems the wisdom of the ancients has been supplanted by the horsepower of Tracker BassBoats. There are several books I can recommend if you like to do a little paper fishing:

BEYOND TROUT-A FLYFISHING GUIDE. Barry Reynolds & John Berryman. $16.95 Excellent overview of habits, tackle & techniques for bass, sunfish, crappie & others.

L.L. BEAN FLY FISHING FOR BASS HANDBOOK. Dave Whitlock. $8.95? Nicely illustrated. Spends quite a bit of time on tackle, that an experienced flyfisher could gloss over, but still good intro.

FLY TYING & FISHING FOR PANFISH & BASS. Tom Keith. $19.95. Large format. Lots of good instructions for tying patterns, and a very good overview of fishing techniques.

FLY FISHING FOR SMALLMOUTH BASS. Harry Murray. $17.95(hardback, I think it is now in paper at a lower price). A very good treatise on going after smallies in rivers and streams. If anything, take a look a the strymph pattern, it's much like a wooly bugger, but Harry's pattern really is effective.

There are other titles, but these are some of my favorites. Since I work for Borders Books & Music, I'll refer you to them to check out the selection of books, or www.Borders.com. Have a great time on the (fresh)water.
Mark
