Subject: Portsmouth Fishing Update

We arrived just after a strong Nor'easter blew through to find a beach that had been thoroughly washed out and with sand that even got a Ford Expedition stuck. OK, that was more driver error than anything, but still, it was tough driving to the North Point.
We were aware that the fishing might suffer (it takes several days after a storm for the fish to really come back), but we caught several small Croaker on our first casts and thought things would be OK. Then the medium sized Blues came in (2-3lbs) and we enjoyed that for about 45 minutes. After that, the only ones to coax any more fish the rest of the week were Mike and Finlay, taking a few more Blues. Of course, they attribute that to superior fishing skills but we know better. In the final analysis, the fishing was subpar. We did hear of a couple of Drum @ 30"-40" but we never saw them ourselves.
As long as the weather holds, fishing should pick up considerably. Our luck came in the south end sloughs and the South Point. According to the locals, if there is a Southwest wind, fish the south beach and the point.
Catches came on both cut mullet and shrimp. A few Blues were caught on medium-sized Hopkins lures. If you have the time to arrange for bait before a trip, call Tripp's Seafood in Havelock. They will leave bait in a box with ice for you to pick up after hours, if necessary. All you have to do is leave a check under the door. Morris Marina's bait situation can be iffy. Oftentimes, they only have frozen stuff.
That's all until the Fall trip!
