It’s interesting to note that the watch officer aboard the “L 33” was Leutnant zur See Ernst Schirlitz. He escaped an earlier brush with fate when serving as watch officer aboard Kapitänleutnant Franz Stabbert’s “L 20” when that ship crash landed in Norway on 3 May 1916 (he avoided internment as he was classified a “shipwrecked mariner"). Schirlitz remained in the German Navy after WWI and ultimately reached the rank of Vizeadmiral. He served from 1 March 1943-9 May 1945 as the Commanding Admiral Atlantic Coast and concurrently (20 August 1944-9 May 1945) as Commandant of Fortress La Rochelle, France. He was a recipient of the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross (11 March 1945) and the German Cross in Gold (1 December 1944).
Regards,
Shawn
