Danemark & Shawn -
Thanks for your input. However - Ernst Lehman(of ill-fated Hindenberg fame) wrote a book after the war on most of the Zeppelins, based mostly on personal interviews. In an interview with Bocker, Bocker said that he tried to set the ship afire but did not succeed. As the Commander, his first duty would have been to destroy the airship. Why would he say he didn't? And if he did not, who did?
I think it burned well after Bocker and his crew had left, to surrender, not be captured. The fire could well have been set accidentally afterward considering the hydro/oxygen mixture permeating the area, either by someone smoking or spontaneous combustion.
Reports say a crewman's "charred remains" were found under the burnt wreck. It is unlikely that Bocker would have allowed this to happen if he burned the ship himself. And in a message to his wife soon afterward, said there were no casualties.
I have great regard for Dr. Robinson but believe he is incorrect in this case.
Doing research for an article on this incident, I find the contradictions many and growing.
