Hi Danemark - thanks again for the photos
If you study the pictures, you can see the cottage in the background where Bocker went (unsuccessfully) to warn the inhabitants - who were hiding in closets, afraid of the 'Hun'. If there were such a "great explosion", so close, where is the damage? In the next picture, while it is clear that the covering burned completely, the gondola also shows no sign of an explosion.
Special Constable Edgar Nicholas arrived on his bicycle with "drawn sabre". Bocker asked directions to the nearest village and he and his crew marched off, followed by Nicholas and a group of villagers. It was there that Bocker surrendered to the Mayor of Peldon.
It must have been a really comical sight, 22 Germans who could have been well-armed, marching off "in good order", followed by a sabred policeman on a bicycle.
Actually, there was little choice for Bocker. He did not know exactly where he was and would soon be surrounded by the military. There was no point in an "OK Corral" shootout
so he surrendered.
