The packet loss is probably local, which would require a higher data backbone for the uni... That would require replacing most of the switch gear. Since the network ports are a recent edition, I can only assume that the switch gear's new as well. There's no way on earth that they could justify the replacement of this stuff :

24 port Intel swithch (2 Gigabit Backbone) = ~£1000

That's fucking outrageous!!! And I'm not even sure that a 2Gbit backbone is any better than what's installed!

Still, see what the IT staff say, but don't be too optimistic.
