The Pit at competitions are usually a 10'x10' area (depending on available venue area). This area is your team’s home base in a sense. This is where you store your robot when you are not competing. Minor repairs to your robot are done in this area. Everything that you take to competition is stored in this area also. This will include and is not limited to: your robot spare parts, batteries, computer, hand and power tools, nuts and bolts and a first aid kit. Anything needed to repair and/or rebuild the robot is really your main objective to have in your pit. In the pit area, there will be teams next to you and across from you in their area. Even though it is set up in an orderly fashion it does get crowded and safety should always be practiced. On that note, SAFETY GLASSES are a REQUIREMENT in the pit area at all times, NO EXCEPTIONS. Your team will also be supplied with one 110V grounded receptacle (end of an extension cord). I will advise you to bring a power strip with a surge protector or two. This is supplied to you to use for your battery charges and your power tools. A far as power tools are considered, light cutting, drilling, and minor working is allowed. Any grinding, painting, or machining such as welding is outlawed in the pits. A machinist on a first comes first serve basis free of charge to all teams does any machining you would need. The machine shop is usually located on site but with the growing number of teams it is best not to count on the machine shop unless in an emergency. Wireless communication devices are also forbidden in the pits and at the arena. If the need arises that you have to power up your robot and test things you must use your tether option. As far as things you should bring with your team. Here is a little more extensive list of things you should bring: robot spare parts, about 3 or 4 batteries, 3 or 4 battery chargers, extension cord, power strip, a cordless or corded drill/driver, drill bits, files, hack saw, Allen wrenches (Standard and Metric), screw drives (slotted and Phillips), socket set (Standard and Metric), Open ended wrenches (Standard and Metric), pliers, side cutters, wire strippers, safety glasses, stock aluminum and angle of various sizes, shafts, nuts, bolts, and washers. These are just some various things you should bring. You should bring more or less depending on the extensiveness of your robot design. Always bring spares of everything and always be prepared for the worst-case scenario, you never know. Don’t worry if you forgot something though, teams are always more than willing to lend a part, a tool, or even in some cases a team member. I hope this has helped you. If you have anymore questions please don’t hesitate to ask my team or myself. As always good luck with your robot and even more luck in the Buckeye Regional.
