I dont know, Gina, i am on the fence on this, i have been reading most of the coverage about it in the past week+ and these are my thoughts: Its not that i dont trust Natural News and i am sure there is a good deal of PR involved but it isn't just the mainstream media that are applauding this decision. Tons of cancer survivors and even regular people that once didnt like Jolie, are still saying this was a brave choice for her. The part of that first article where they claim that People's magazine gets edited 3 weeks before it goes to publication? Total bs since we had seen many times how they put news on the cover LESS THAN A WEEK after they break. I have read People magazine for years and have seen them put breaking news on there by the end of the week after it happens. So that separate point makes Natural News article look like they are grasping at straws, they should not have used it as an example.
I mean, i am not naive, her NY Times article revealing the surgery does look like a very well planned and thought out thing, i certainly dont think she just sat down and wrote it herself. And perhaps there is some corporate gain there too. But i highly doubt she did it for the money or to be in cahoots with the bigwigs. Her and Brad do not need money, they have more money than most people can dream of. It could have been a trade off to donate to some of her charities, etc. But the original decision i am 100% sure she made for herself and for her family. And listen, it's not because "she's this scared to die", i dont think she's any more scared than any other person ,nobody wants to die young. But i do believe she was 100% thinking about her kids and not wanting to leave them motherless before some of them even get into their teens! She's pushing 40 and 85% chance of breast cancer threat is nothing to sneeze at. If i was given an 85% chance prognosis like that and i had the financial means to do that, heck yeah i would make the same decision, it's not even a question.
Having said that though, whats interesting to me is that Christina Applegate did the EXACT SAME THING a few years back, she found the gene and had the preventative double masectomy. But it was barely reported. Because she doesn't have the star power Jolie does (if i were her, i'd be pissed LOL) i mean they are glorifying all this ad nauseum, just a bit over the top. They are acting like she had her breasts cut off and left herself without anything there instead of having top of the line reconstructive surgery that probably makes her breasts look 100 times better than her natural ones did. The flip side is that most regular women cant afford the best reconstructive surgeries money can buy, they actually have to walk around missing either 1 or both breasts. now THATs heroism!!! Media should profile those women and how they still are finding ways to be sexy and beautiful despite having suffered through that.
But again, while i do criticize certain aspects of this whole thing, i feel like if this was meant to give hope to women with cancer, that if such high profile person can do this, then there are options, there is a light at the end of the tunnel sometimes, women with this gene can make decisions for themselves. That is definitely something one cant take away from this.
So in conclusion, i do feel that i see both sides of this, media did put Jolie on a pedestal to a degree i have never seen before, it is extremely good PR for her. But also she did go through something very difficult, nobody does this type of thing for fun or for publicity, this is multiple very complex surgeries we are talking about that do carry risks. And i do think she was thinking about her children when she did it and that she does love her kids to that degree that she will put herself through whatever necessary to be present in their lives as long as she can. And if she's made women fighting for their lives with cancer realize double masectomy is not the horrifying thing they all thought it is, more power to her,
I do however, wish the media just lays off this whole thing already, i am sick of hearing about it by now.
