St. Helens Town have this week announced a reshuffle at both board level and among the managerial staff at the club. Local businessman and former Town goalkeeper Joe Paladino, has joined the St. Helens board as Director of Football. Mr Paladino has agreed to invest a substantial amount of time, effort and most importantly money into the club over the next five seasons with a view to seeing the club progress on the field and off. The agreement, which will see an additional business colleague of Mr Paladino join the Town board, is currently in the hands of both parties’ solicitors.

Unfortunately one of the first casualties of the reshuffle is manager Paul Lodge who was told of the changes on Friday evening and who agreed to step down with immediate effect.

“Paul had undertaken a difficult task at the beginning of the season on a very limited budget and despite the team’s current position we were confident that he and the players would have maintained our NWCFL Division One status,” said Town Vice chairman John McKiernan

“However, it was a choice of continuing for the foreseeable future with a limited budget or taking up the offer of some major financial assistance.” Mr McKiernan continued.

“The club are grateful to Paul for his efforts during the current campaign and wish him well for the future. Indeed Paul has actively encouraged his squad of players to stay with the club and to take their opportunities under new boss Mark Cox – something of a rarity at this level of football. Paul agreed, at Friday’s meeting, that it was too good an opportunity for the club to pass up,” added Mr McKiernan

Jim Barrett, the Town Chairman said, “We are deeply indebted to Joe and his backers for their commitment to the club and are delighted to welcome them on board.”

“It’s been backing such as this which means the difference between existence and progression and having spoken with Joe, I realise his ambitions are exactly the same as ours.”

He continued, “Down the years, not many former Town players have sought to be involved once their playing days are over but the ones that have, have made a lasting impressions. The last one to do so was Alan Wellens who as manager give us our finest hour at Wembley in 1987 and it would be nice to think that Joe and his business team could give us more golden memories and continue the trend.”

Firstly however, we have a relegation battle to fight before we can set our stall out for next season and a good public response would be appreciated to welcome to the new recruits when we take on Atherton LR at Knowsley Road on Saturday 31st January (3pm).
