She is only yet another pale shape among the clouds, passing overhead, and passing on into Ceneri d' Nerezza.

Suddenly, in front of Mulan, two dark shaped appear. One she knows must be her father, for he matches the description. But the other...she gasps. "Sombra!"

"Sister." His voice is dead, and holds no emotion.

Mulan backs away, not liking the look in his eyes. "What are you doing here?"

Still without emotion, he replies, "To become a blackblood." Mulan turns and tries to run, only to find the two in front of her. "What's going on here?"

"Don't give her time to talk you out of this," warns the stranger. "Do it, now."

Sombra hesitates, not sure he can do this.

"Are you a blackblood, or not?" the stranger demands.

Sombra hardens his resolve, and steps forward. Mulan realizes what he is going to do. "Sombra, I won't ask you what you're doing, I already know. What I don't know, is why."

"You have betrayed everything to whom your loyalty should belong," he responds in a dead voice, moving forward. "Your blood. Your chosen alliance."

"My blood is just a liquid," Mulan snaps. "And I left the alliance to protect them."

"You left them."

"Fine then, kill me. Then everyone is safe." Unmoving, Mulan looks him in the eye. "Safe from me, from my blood. Safe from my treachery, if that's what you want to call it. I won't have to stay away from the alliance. I can watch them, but won't be able to hurt them. Won't even have blood to betray."

Sombra advances, and rears, striking out at her. She falls to the ground. "Whatever happens, I will not fight you."

He grins maliciously. "Then it will be my pleasure to dispatch a coward."

Ignoring him, Mulan continues: "I will not fight you, for then I would kill you, and I refuse to be a traitor to my own twin."

This strikes home. Sombra freezes, looking into his twin's eyes. He realizes that if he does this, that is exactly what he will be. He thinks of the fighting he had seen in Escuro, blackblood fighting blackblood. He steps back, and turns to his father. "Blackbloods are loyal to each other, hmm?" he asks softly. "Then if I do this, I still will not be a blackblood, for I will have betrayed my own sister."

Mulan stares at him, surprised. Then, slowly, she gets to her feet.

"But of course, blackbloods are not loyal to each other, or I would not have seen what I saw in Escuro, and what I saw was this: blackblood fighting blackblood, over a mere piece of land."

Mulan comes to stand beside her brother. She knew he had it in him, but knowing something and seeing it are two different things. Nevertheless, she stands beside him, for this is a pleasant surprise.

"Go now, Aswad," Sombra says quietly. "I now give you one chance to leave before I tear you to pieces, a chance you do not deserve, but which I give you anyway."

"If you did that, you would betray your own father," Aswad answers.

It is Mulan who speaks now: "You are not our father any more than blackbloods are loyal to one another."

Aswad sneers. "Then as I am not your father, I can kill you now, and not be guilty of slaying my own offspring!" He disappears, then appears behind the two, and his fangs tear into Mulan's flesh before either of them realizes what is happening. She wheels to meet him, but within moments he has her on the ground. Sombra intervenes, barreling into his father. They engage in combat, rearing and biting, and kicking. Sombra's sides are scored with cuts out of which pour ebony blood in no time. Aswad soon knocks him flat and advances, ready to deliver the final blow.

But he has forgotten about Mulan, who has just risen to her feet. She explodes forth and knocks him away from her twin. She lunges at hi, and again he knocks her down. Sombra remains unconscious as Mulan struggles to her feet, then is knocked down again. On the ground, she strikes out with her hind hooves at him, which distracts him long enough for her to scramble to her feet and attack again.

Sombra awakens, takes one look at the situation, and scrambles to his feet. He races to Mulan's side.

Seeing that he now has two opponents, Aswad inquires, "Is this fair?"

"No, but I could care less," Sombra responds.

"Hmm. Hardly silverblood behavior."

"But we are not blackbloods, are we?" Mulan asks sweetly. "We are blackbloods."

"You are no more blackbloods than I am a silver," Aswad spits. "You have no place. You are neither silverbloods nor blackbloods, and you will find friends with neither." And with this, he disappears.

Both twins looks around suspiciously. "I think he's gone," Mulan says at last.

"Yes," Sombra agrees.

They are silent for a moment. Then, "Mulan--"

"I know," she interrupts. "You don't need to say anything. I'm your twin, remember?"

Sombra nods. "Should we go back to the alliance?"

Mulan frowns. "But--we're blackbloods--"

Sombra shakes his head. "Aswad was right about one thing: No matter what color our blood is, we are not blackbloods, not really anyway. We could have been, but we chose not to be." He pauses. "Does that make sense?"

"I think so," Mulan says slowly. Another silence. Then, "Well, let's go." And so they went.
