Anthrax scare mail up for auction

Pieces of mail quarantined during the anthrax scare in New Jersey are being auctioned on the internet.

One man has already sold six pieces of irradiated mail on eBay for between £4 and £9.

The man, identified only as Dr Z, said among the items he sold were a returned cheque and a credit card letter.

Another man said he sold an irradiated flyer from American Express for £13.

He said: ''It's amazing what people will collect."

Dr Z said most of the bidders are stamp collectors or mail enthusiasts.

The items were among about 800,000 pieces of post quarantined inside the mail facility in Hamilton, New Jersey, from October until mid-December.

The mail was irradiated and placed in individual plastic bags for delivery to their intended recipients but the Postal Service advised them to simply throw the bag away if they felt uneasy about opening it.

It is believed there are currently about a dozen listings for mail on the website site. Officials at eBay said they have not flagged the items as questionable and no-one has called for their removal.
