Blur provide signature tune for mission to Mars

A track by Blur is to be played on Mars.

A recording of the song will be launched on the British-led Beagle 2 space mission to Mars next year.

It will be transmitted back to Earth to let scientists know the Beagle 2 has landed safely on the Red Planet.

The idea came from Blur drummer Dave Rowntree and bassist Alex James, who contacted planetary scientist Colin Pillinger, BBC Online reports.

Mr Pillinger is to attach a small lander to the European Space Agency's "Mars Express" space craft carrying the Beagle 2, which will look for evidence of life on the surface of Mars.

Mr Pillinger told Radio 4's Today programme: "We have to announce our arrival and normally we send back some piece of computer gobbledygook and wanted to have something that was instantly recognisable.

"When we started this project we really need to demonstrate credibility and we also need to raise a lot of cash. Blur could provide both media appeal and this signal for us."

James says the Blur composition is loosely based on a mathematical sequence, with the band adding their own style to the track.

He said: "It is kind of like a musical cave painting, a ponderous, clear tune."
