'Bored' chemist stole elderly colleague's underwear

A British-born chemist in Australia broke into an elderly colleague's house to steal her underwear.

Brisbane District Court heard Dr Ronald Kenneth Mellow wanted to inject some excitement into his life.

The former Queensland government scientist pleaded guilty to burglary and was put on two-years' probation.

Crown prosecutor Michael Jurczyszyn told the court Mellow, 53, took the 64-year-old woman's keys from their work and had copies made before breaking in last June when she was on holiday, The Australian reports.

According to court files, Mellow stuffed a pillow case with 10 pairs of stockings, three pairs of underwear, two bras, a petticoat, a nightie and three pairs of shoes. A neighbour caught him in the act, tackled him and put him through a cupboard door, before sitting on him until police arrived.

Mr Jurczyszyn says Mellow was taken to Indooroopilly police station where he failed to offer an explanation for his behaviour.

Defence lawyer Chris Wilson said: "He really can't explain it and is acutely embarrassed and ashamed. He has already suffered some punishment by having his head thrown through a cupboard door."

Mr Wilson says Mellow resigned to save the woman the embarrassment of working with him.

The court heard his victim couldn't offer an explanation for the incident which she described as "quite bizarre". Judge Forno said: "You've realised, I hope, the stupidity of what you did. There is nothing to identify that you're a danger. This one-off behaviour represents some aberration in your conduct."

The scientist has a new government job in Canberra.
