Woman on 10,000-mile taxi ride held for psychiatric tests

A Florida woman taking a 10,000-mile taxi ride is undergoing psychiatric tests after being stopped by police.

Patricia Agness from Jacksonville wants to travel to Alaska and back but she can't drive and doesn't like flying.

Police say she's undergoing a mental health evaluation after a disturbance at a hotel in northern California.

Fort Bragg police chief Bruce Cumming said: "Officers went and talked to her, and she was making some unusual statements."

Miss Agness, 55, set off from home with Gator City Taxi drivers Joe Gattuso and Safdar Hussein on July 16.

They took eight-hour shifts behind the wheel but gave up on their task in California, claiming she wanted to shorten their driving breaks.

George Steele, a driver with the United Cab Co in Santa Barbara, continued the journey to the Fort Bragg hotel. Police say Miss Agness insisted on staying in reception instead of a room.

Mr Steele, a former police officer from Glasgow says: "I had no idea what I was dealing with.

"She is a sweet and very nice lady, but I also started to realise as the conversation went on that she was not as logical a thinker as I would like her to be."

It's not clear if Miss Agness will be able to resume her sightseeing tour.
