Goin' for broke

Performances heat up as rodeo's finals close in

The sixth performance of the 74th Annual San Angelo Rodeo got off to a slow start but quickly heated up Thursday night at San Angelo Coliseum.

As Saturday's finals draw closer, the pressure to score high and stay on the animals longer continues building.

Several bull riders in the opening section received no score for falling off early, but Marcus Michaelis and Fred Boettcher ended the night with the highest score in the final section, a 79. However, there are still six scores higher than those, including the 86 scored by Zack Oakes on Sunday.

In all, only three of the 19 bull riders managed to stay on and score.

One of the best showings of Thursday night came from saddle-bronc rider Chad Ferley. He scored a 74 on his initial ride, which turned out to be the third-best of the night, but not high enough to put him in the top five for the entire event. Fortunately, because his horse was slow getting out of the chute, he got a re-ride.

And he made the most of it.

Ferley rode his horse to a score of 86, easily the best ride of the night and the best of the rodeo so far, topping the 84 scored by Taos Muncy on Saturday night.

''The horse just stood there for a while, and there was really nothing I could do,'' Ferley said of his first ride. ''The re-ride was sure good though. I just got in there and got a good spur in, and he kept getting madder and madder. I am real happy about my score.''

Another highlight of Thursday night was turned in by team ropers Jimmy Tanner and Arky Rogers. The duo turned in a time of 4.2 seconds, the best of the night. Dale Martin and Kevin Redstrom finished with a time of 6.3 seconds.

Tanner and Rogers have the fastest time of the third go, besting the 4.6 by Trent Cornelius and Nick Simmons turned in on the rodeo's opening night on Feb. 16.

The barrel racing event saw two ladies turn in top-four times, including Layna Kight, whose 14.42 was the best of the night and the entire first go. Shali Lord had a time of 14.67, which puts her in a tie for fourth in the first go.

In bareback riding, Joe Gunderson had the night's highest score with a 79. Four riders on Thursday scored 77, 78 or 79, but none could hit 80. D.V. Fennell's 88 scored on Saturday is still the rodeo's highest.

''My ride felt good,'' Gunderson said. ''At the end, the horse kind of tipped and I started to go with him. That cost me a few points. It was still a good ride.''

In calf roping, Johnny Emmons and Blake Huckabee each scored an 8.5. Jade Conner still leads the third go-round with the 8.1 he scored last Friday. San Angelo's Brook Burnett scored a 9.4 on Thursday. 2002 San Angelo Rodeo and 2004 San Angelo Roping Fiesta champion Trevor Brazile scored a 10.3.

In steer wrestling, Levi Wisness turned in the night's best time with a 4.4, but failed to break into the top five for the rodeo. Justin Blaine Davis leads the third go with a 3.5 he scored on Friday.

The rodeo continues tonight with a 7:30 performance at the coliseum.
