Truman Wright, a Houston real estate investor, said he will head up a league that will recruit top professional rodeo stars, place them on teams and pay them salaries.

Wright is the president of Pro Rodeo League, which could begin its season in 2008. The teams will draft high-profile athletes including seven-time world roping champion Fred Whitfield, Wright said.

Wright said some of the players will earn salaries of more than six figures, but he declined to cite specifics.

Six teams will represent major cities and competition will be head to head. Each team will consist of five contestants in each of the standard rodeo events – bareback riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, saddle bronc riding, barrel racing, team roping and bull riding.

Bareback rider Wes Stevenson is not exactly on top of the world, but he thinks he's headed in the right direction.
A draft system in early 2008 will determine competitors for each team. Wright said it will be an open draft, which will include members of the PRCA and PBR. The season is expected to start later in 2008.

Organizers have been planning the league for four years. They have consulted with contestants and stock contractors on the rodeo side. They also are bringing in experts from other professional leagues to help them get started.
