JamesBluntisHigh: Hi Scott
AOLMusicScottB: hey hey
AOLMusicScottB: Where are you?
JamesBluntisHigh: NYC - the record label's artist lounge - code word for torture chamber
AOLMusicScottB: ha, don't sign anything without your lawyer looking at it first
AOLMusicScottB: even a receipt for lunch
JamesBluntisHigh: no - I'll sign anything nowadays
AOLMusicScottB: how long have you been in the states this time?
JamesBluntisHigh: I just finished a ten date tour. This was our second US Tour this year and we've got a third in the fall.
AOLMusicScottB: so are you claiming east coast or west coast?
JamesBluntisHigh: I enjoy both. I recorded Back to Bedlam in Los Angeles and had a great time there. I've also got friends in New York, so I enjoy it here too - and the bars stay open late!
AOLMusicScottB: that is true.
AOLMusicScottB: how big of a deal was it for you to break in the US?
JamesBluntisHigh: It's great to have the opportunity to visit new places, and I was hopeful that a few people in the US would like it, but musical success is not about number of units sold, it's about musical connection, and so I was just happy that a few people were in to my stuff.
AOLMusicScottB: even so, it's got to be pretty amazing to see your album in the Top 10 in the US
JamesBluntisHigh: Sure, you're right. There was a time when it was sitting at Number 2, and it was mind-blowing. I'm very glad the people here have given me the time of day.
AOLMusicScottB: ok, a few questions about your videos
JamesBluntisHigh: shoot
AOLMusicScottB: so in the video for Beautiful...where did you jump to?
JamesBluntisHigh: I jumped off a cliff in Majorca in the Mediterranean (sp?). The director said I was an inch too far to the left on take-off the first time, so he made me jump again. It was well over 50 feet, and that's why my voice is so high now...
AOLMusicScottB: hahahah, you're a brave man
JamesBluntisHigh: or just a fool
AOLMusicScottB: compelling footage though for sure
JamesBluntisHigh: it was a great simple idea by Sam Brown, the director
AOLMusicScottB: ok, the video for High
AOLMusicScottB: did you get a discount on the room that you filmed the video in cause the lights kept flickering on and off?
JamesBluntisHigh: i hope so, because it didn't look as though anyone else would use that room either
JamesBluntisHigh: maybe we didnt pay at all, and that's why I had to run away?
AOLMusicScottB: tape and dash?
JamesBluntisHigh: then again, maybe I was the last Ewok
JamesBluntisHigh: in a new sci-fi movie
AOLMusicScottB: you did kind of look like an ewok
AOLMusicScottB: but bigger
AOLMusicScottB: seriously, you should write a screen play
JamesBluntisHigh: I'll think about it...
AOLMusicScottB: did you do any writing while you were in the army? or do you write in general (besides, songs of course)
AOLMusicScottB: and IM's

JamesBluntisHigh: I wrote a diary in Kosovo. When we got home, my boss asked to read it and then lost it. It covered an entire 6 months.
AOLMusicScottB: what a jackass
JamesBluntisHigh: I just called him "sir"
AOLMusicScottB: hahaha
AOLMusicScottB: were there times when you were there that you thought you were going to die?
AOLMusicScottB: like this is it, I'm not making it out of this one
JamesBluntisHigh: It was a war zone. Everything went on.
AOLMusicScottB: but i would imagine sometimes are scarier than others, no?
JamesBluntisHigh: There are moments of adrenalin. Responsibility dissolves fear.
AOLMusicScottB: man, you are a good seed.
JamesBluntisHigh: Thanks again
JamesBluntisHigh: It was much harder for people whose country it was.
AOLMusicScottB: would you have joined the army if it was today and your were going to iraq instead of Kosovo?
JamesBluntisHigh: I joined the army because they paid for my education
JamesBluntisHigh: I was unsure of the press angle in Kosovo
JamesBluntisHigh: and the politicians angle...
JamesBluntisHigh: But when we got in there, it was obvious that we were saving lives
JamesBluntisHigh: so it felt worthwhile.
JamesBluntisHigh: I haven't been to Iraq, so all I have to go on is press and politicians, and neither give a clear picture.
JamesBluntisHigh: No matter what your views, it may still be worth going so that you can be a voice of reason
JamesBluntisHigh: in a confused place
JamesBluntisHigh: As a soldier, you can still use your common sense.
AOLMusicScottB: wish more politicians would use theirs
JamesBluntisHigh: fat chance!
AOLMusicScottB: ha

AOLMusicScottB: ok, the album title
AOLMusicScottB: bedlam as in word for crazy or as in the place?
JamesBluntisHigh: The institution.
JamesBluntisHigh: It's based on the idea that the mind can be a lonely place, and I was recalling those thoughts, ideas and memories that one would normally keep locked in the cell of the mind.
AOLMusicScottB: although bedlam (the record) is dark at times, overall it feels positive
JamesBluntisHigh: it's miserable with a dash of hope!
AOLMusicScottB: i buy that
AOLMusicScottB: any news on the next record?
JamesBluntisHigh: I'm going into the studio in December with Tom Rothrock and my touring band, and we'll get back to you some time after that!
AOLMusicScottB: great.
AOLMusicScottB: ok, one more
JamesBluntisHigh: SURE
AOLMusicScottB: your favorite concert ever?
JamesBluntisHigh: Cat Power at SXSW. The audience sang her backing vocals for her. That's got to save money. It was very special.
JamesBluntisHigh: Favorite song from the set was Good Woman.
AOLMusicScottB: awesome.
AOLMusicScottB: thanks for taking the time to chat with us today
JamesBluntisHigh: Pleasure. Good to talk to you.
AOLMusicScottB: good luck on the rest of your trip here and can't wait to hear the next record
JamesBluntisHigh: Thanks. Bye!
AOLMusicScottB: peace

Scott B has recently moved to SoBe in Miami and is currently sunning, clubbing, growing a mustache and just basically being rich.
