Rodeo horses found; several injured

All the rodeo bucking horses that escaped from Gandolfo Arena on Sunday morning have been found, though several are injured and will not be used in the Reno Rodeo, officials said Monday.

"We have them all," said Don Hutsell, co-owner of the Big Bend and Flying 5 rodeo companies. "Some of them are crippled up, though."

The rough, rocky terrain north of Gandolfo Arena in east Sparks, left several of the horses with sore hooves. Bucking horses do not wear horseshoes. The 58 that escaped are based in Washington State and are more accustomed to grasslands than the high desert of Nevada.

How the horses escaped from the holding pens at Gandolfo is still unknown, but Hutsell believes they were released intentionally.

"Someone had to let them out and run them off for them to go that far," he said.

The horses were found about six miles from the arena by cowboys on horseback and an ATV. The horses followed a circuitous route, and 55 of them were found in the hills above D'Andrea Golf Course about noon Sunday.

Three others were found by a volunteer pilot later. They were rounded up by volunteers and returned to the holding pens around 6 p.m., said Reno Rodeo spokesman Steve Schroeder.

One horse was originally thought to still be missing Sunday night, but a recount of the horses on Monday showed it had been in the large group rounded up.
