Rodeo events face city ban
Last updated May 15 2006 03:27 PM PDT
CBC News
Vancouver council will vote Tuesday on whether to ban calf roping, steer busting and other rodeo events, even though the city hasn't hosted a rodeo in nearly a decade.

Rather than ban rodeos outright, city staff are recommending that council include rodeo events under its list of prohibited business activities – at the prompting of the Vancouver Humane Society.

That includes calf and goat roping, horse tripping and steer wrestling. The new bylaw would also ban the use of electric cattle prods, bucking straps, spurs and whips.

The society first brought the issue to council's attention more than a year ago, because of concerns that rodeo events could make an appearance at the 2010 Winter Olympics.

"One of the reasons we wanted council to take this action and prohibit rodeo activities was a concern we had about the possibility of the rodeo industry using the 2010 Olympics as a showcase for rodeo events," said the society's executive director, Peter Fricker.

He said rodeo events showed up at the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City – and he doesn't want to see the same thing happen here.

Fricker also said that just having the bylaw on the books is an important statement to make.

"We're hoping, for example, that it sends a very clear message that we have one city that is going to prohibit the inhumane use of animals in this kind of event."

CCA and MRCA lost Winnipeg rodeo this year because of a law that was passed without any press. From what I understand animals are not allowed to be used for entertainment within city limits (race track grandfathered)......what confuses me is how they are allowed to have a bull riding at the MTS center? Anyway....my info on the reason the rodeo was cancelled could be incorrect, but my point is.....make a stink and let them know there are people that want to have a rodeo if all they hear are those against, the rodeo the organizers will feel defeated and give in. This is an opportunity to let the organizers know you support them and you are thankful they stick up for the competitors Don't let your guard down!
Go and vote! Copy the text of my first post in and send it to all you family and friends, encourage them to pass it on.
