PRCA, Hall Won't Move to Albuquerque

COLORADO SPRINGS � Spurning a $17 million offer by New Mexico's Legislature to move to Albuquerque, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association on Tuesday announced it was reversing its decision to accept the offer and instead will remain put.
New Mexico's offer stipulated that both the association and the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy, separate entities controlled by their own boards, make the move together.
Hall of Fame board members on Monday balked at making the move and instead voted to reconsider New Mexico's offer, along with a competing incentive package from Colorado Springs and the cost of the move, said Terry Sullivan, a Hall of Fame board member and president of the Colorado Springs convention and visitors bureau.
''In light of actions taken by the Board of Trustees of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame, the PRCA Board of Directors has voted to suspend consideration of relocation of its headquarters,'' PRCA Board Chairman Tom Feller said in a statement. ''This action does not, however, preclude future considerations of any action the Board of Directors believes to be in the best interest of the PRCA.''
A spokesman for New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson said the PRCA board's action prompted the state to withdraw its incentives package to the organization.
''The state's position is, the deal is off the table,'' said Richardson spokesman Jon Goldstein.
Colorado Springs Mayor Lionel Rivera said community organizations offered up to $2 million in grants, while the city agreed to issue tax-exempt bonds on the organization's behalf for improvements or a new facility.
The PRCA sanctions more than 650 rodeos each year, drawing 24 million fans. The organization has been based in Colorado Springs since 1979. It employs 85 people and has a payroll of about $3.35 million.

- Look what happens when two guys scrambling to be big shots make a deal. If old Bill is serious about promoting rodeo in NM, he could give me part of that money and I'd haul more kids to the Etbauer school, Brent Lewis school, you name it. Wonder why they only think of promoting in a way that makes them look like a big shot? Bringing new kids in seems to me to be the most important, and not all kids have parents that are supportive, but are OK with it, they just don't know how to go about it. I've got a solid training program that works like this. Let them get on a few, then haul them to a rodeo school where the real instructors are at. (NT) -- Hap, 06:47:27 05/19/06 Fri
  - Nothing is a better investment than an education. Taking kids to a school is about as good as it gets but bringing a school to the kids would be beyond good. I don't care much what sport it is the kids need a lot of practice. I played golf 1 day a year the whole time my kid was golfing but I hauled the golf team thosands of miles.     - The other kind of school does a kid the best then the 3 R's one. They been doing some articles on AOL about successful people. One was really bored with school, ended up graduating high school with a D average. But his head was always going it said. So he got into selling stuff and was good at it. Opened a small advertising agent place. Microsoft hired him when they first come out with windows, but they were late and only got a booth at the convention so he hired a bunch of hotel people and got this logo to put on every hotel room pillow to visit their booth. He had another idea for a client who turned down his idea, so he took 5 grand of his own money and started making pre-paid phone cards.
