Alikom Assalaam.
First,the one should lead the prayer is the one who knows Quran more ,and the owner of the house has right to lead the prayer (if he can) unless he gives permision to some one else to lead.
The traveller can be the Imam while he is shortining his prayer( doing 2 Raka,ah),and the people following him should complete the prayer ( if they are not traveller).
In your case,yes the traveller can lead the prayer doing 2 Raka,ah,while his friend should complete it to( 4 Raka,ah).
