White space contributes to the flow of a design enhancing the appearance and usability of a website. Good use of white space makes a page easier to read and maintain focus as it draws you in to the focal points. Three ways to achieve this stuck with me as I read through the material.

*Keep the text cells small (who likes to keep scrolling anyway?)
*Make your page easy on the eyes
*Create an aisle of white space leading readers to your focal point

It's taken me several tries to get my own web page to flow exactly right. I've been spending a lot of time working on just the right layout taking into consideration the margins, color, balance, consistency and white space. I'm getting there - I'm definitely a boxy symmetrical type!

This website's use of the margins draws you into the center of the page and entices you to take a challenge. The characters are fun and colorful and the white space allows them to really stand out. As you dig deeper into the site you can see that they created groupings of similar elements - challenge titles are arranged in a similar way changing just the font color, subtitles explaining the challenge were created in exactly the same way and small graphics are placed in a consistent manner.

I picked this one because I thought the concept was good for early primary students. It's a dot-to-dot where the kids connect the letters of the alphabet to reveal a hidden picture. While I like the concept of the page, I thought the page was a little too white. The white background swallows up the main attraction. The navigation bar is nice and colorful yet the main focal point was done in all black and white from the letters to the hidden picture. However, the actual space that it occupies on the page follows the 50-60% of the window rule.

I like the layout of this site as well. It's colorful (uses a blue background as the "white space") and really draws you into their site. It has good use of margins around the main design elements, similar to the figure this web site. It also has fun and colorful characters. When you scroll over the characters you find out that the Fleet kids will help you learn how to operate a business. I like how the text is kept hidden and since it is a rollover image it draws you in and makes you read. Each subsequent page follows a similar fun design.
