Hi all,

have an older sister & brother inlaw living in new york, I have recently moved to NY from overseas and when she was confronted with the news of her younger brother & wife coming to NYC - was not too excited with the idea of "her city" being invaded by her little brother. Since then, she has resigned to the fact that I am in town, and although not currently living in the city - is showing signs that she is AOK with it (well I'm here now so who cares?).

Question is - what is the acceptable space (in blocks) I need to give her and hubbie while looking for an apartment myself? They live in a nice area of the city and I have seen some great apartments close to where they live. Do I not even go there and consider their entire neighbourhood off limits? Or move in on her street if the right place turns up?

I think it depends what type of relationship you want. If you want to annoy them, try to find a place on their block, or better yet IN their building.

If you want to be considerate and have a cordial relationship I would think you should stay at least 1 mile away. The world powers agreed to a 1 mile limit in international waters, so this should be safe for siblings too.

p.s. If you find a 2die4 place very near, call and politely ask if it would be a problem.

NYC is HUGE. HUGE. Remember? It is BIG. When I lived there, I never saw some of my neighbors who lived right next door. Bitchy sisters are the worst, I have one of my own, but i'll be damned if I'll seek her approval when it comes to housing. Then again, my sister lives in a slum of the Poconos!

Love,
Theo Greene

I say as long as you're not within walking distance, you're OK. We almost had my MIL move a few blocks away from us. I woulda killed myself if she were that close by.
