A short back swing produces just about as much power as a long backswing because in the short back swing you have more control over the club.

I just bought a swing speed machine and checked the club head speeds with a short and long back swing. The long back swing was a couple of MPH faster but the short backswing produced a more solid contact and the ball is easier to control.

Most of the power is produced in the last 45 degrees of the down swing when the wrist creates the whip-lashing motion.

I think it is more in what feels good to you and how much you control the club and produce straight shots.
