Another fundamental question for everyone:

Do you think the backswing influences the downswing?

I have heard many instructors say yes. I have heard some instructors and players say no.

In the IMA tape Scott says he doesn't care about the backswing you use. On Academy Live last night Marlene Floyd analyzed Nancy Lopez' swing (awfully close to a SA setup there). The remark was made that Nancy's father always told her the backswing is just to get you to a place to make the downswing (ala Scott).

Some have noted here that there NGCIs emphasize a certain takeaway because of the effect it will have on the downswing.

Personally I do not feel there is a connection in terms of club path. My backswing is a chance to set up forces and allingment that will be important on the downswing. In fact with my 'club levering' I set up a lot of this at 'address' (ala IMA drill #5) which simplifies the backswing even more (though it does look funny).
