Gerry Hogan is a golf instructor from Australia who has a book and a video (CG). He is in some ways the 'anti-pro'. One of his points is that the downswing takes less than 0.2 seconds and normal human reaction time is about 0.2 seconds. This means that anything you are going to do in the downswing, you have to 'begin' doing BEFORE the downswing.

In the IMA Sull Swing video, Scott is explicit about the fact that though you extend your right arm you should NOT consciously extend your right wrist. This means the arm extends with the wrist bent back. Try this slowly and compare the feel vs. what you normally do in the swing.

I no longer extend my right arm. My total focus is on preventing the right arm from extending. For me this has been the only relatively pain free way to achieve the sustaining of the left arm/shaft angle that I documented in the post with that title. Literally my total focus is on keeping the right arm bent in a biceps curl position. My arm straightens in my full swing but I don't straighten it. Swing forces and anatomy cause the arm to straighten.

The best I could do in maintaining the angle while thinking of straightening my right arm is documented in the 'before' row in the other post. The result from preventing the extension are in the 'after' row.

The key is getting to IMA "6/100s" in the position Scott demonstrates. This would be (viewed from the front perpendicular to the target line) with the hands in front of the rear leg with the club shaft horizontal. In this position the left arm/shaft angle is about 120 degrees. Note column 3 in my other post and the pro position vs. the amateurs (the 'woman' is the pro Dori - I didn't get that last edit in). If you have an angle less than 90 degrees at this point you are storing more potential energy and will have more 'whip'.

The only amateur that got there was '#4' who had a real short backswing (left arm horizontal - that's why no entry in column 1).

A lot of the discussion between myself and Remington has been how to get to '6/100s' while maintaining the angles.

Your hands are moving forward through all this so the longer you sustain the angle the further forward (up to a point) the bottom of your swing arc will be. You will also get to impact with your hands even with (180 degrees) or slightly ahead of (<180 degrees) the ball. To hit fat from this position would almost require that your body tilt backward.

This will also get you to a position where the release causes your left forearm to rotate STRONGLY counter-clockwise (from your perspective if you play right handed) instead of that velocity being absorbed partially in bending the left wrist back.

Try a few swings where you try to keep your right arm bent all the way through and see how it feels. Also get out the camera:-)

Peter
