Judging by the photo sequences I have from golf magazines and the footage I've seen on The Golf Channel, 'all' touring pros get to this position. Vijay Singh actually has a full 90 degree angle (shaft above horizontal) when his elbow gets in front of his hip. Of those I've seen, Jerry Foltz is the notable exception.

Whatever angle you can establish between the left arm and the shaft with a flat left wrist and your right wrist in 'tray' position (bent), you should be able to maintain to '6/100s'.

It is not easy to hit this position in a real swing. If you can physically achieve it, then you can in a swing with the right technique.
Was you son watching a swing or just judging the static position?
In the photo labeled 'downswing move' at the site I often reference HERE (thanks Kirk), you can see Moe just before '6/100s'. This is the position I mean.
