Scott's (IMA) advice re grip size is that the grip needs to be large enough so the club does not move in your hand when you swing and have the recommended grip. Otherwise grip size is not relevant to IMA:

"The grip size is not part of the principle. It's large so that you'll have better control the golf clubs when you lay it through the palm and over the heel pad"

"Grips size is not a principle of single axis golf. The right size is a grip large enough so your fingers don't dig into your thumb or heel pads"

- from the 'Ask Scott' Archives on Grip.

The control Scott mentions is not to prevent the club from moving toward the fingers but so that the club does not rotate which would change the face angle relative to grip.

The rationale may be different for other systems.

I have never read that CG grip size was set to keep the grip in the fingers but rather to allow the grip to be held securely in the fingers. The same test that Scott mentions in the second quote (so that the fingers don't dig in) I've often seen to test CG grip size as well as IMA. Obviously the grip diameter will vary from a finger to a palm grip with this test and will be larger for a palm grip.
