You also want to insure that you can set a high 'shutter' speed. 1/1000 should be good. I use that and it perfectly freezes the action in each frame.

I have a Sony PC7 which allows you to do this (though I use an older Hi8 cammera for my back yard work). The PC7 has been replaced by, I think, the PC100. This is a Mini DV format. Very small tape, very small camera.
