Subject: *Escape* (continued from the Indoor Arena)

....The trail turned jagged and rocky quite quickly but we continued on and about a half a mile down the trail it turned from rocky to a powdery white sand. Dazzle seemed relieved and so was I. Dazzle had strong feet but he was no Quarter Horse, and we both knew it. Then just as we rounded another bend in the trail, it opened into a wide riverbed filled with the same powdery white sand. Dazzle began prancing with excitement as he remembered the days in California when we used to race along a riverbed located near the ranch where I boarded him. The white sand continued on for miles and both mine and Dazzle's excitement overcame us. I squeezed him lightly and that was all it took. He sped up into an extended canter that soon became a full out gallop as a cloud of sand billowed behind us. The sunset was gorgeous and turned everything around a golden hue. By then Dazzle was beginning to tire, but he wasn't about to admit it so I reined him in to a nice lope, and then a jog, as we made our way back down the riverbed towards the ranch. By the time we got back to the ranch, all the horses were waiting impatiently for their dinner. But they would have to wait because Dazzle needed my full attention at the moment. After untacking him I picked his hooves and got rid of all the rocks that had lodged themselves in the sensitive parts of his feet. Then I hosed his legs off with cold water and wrapped them to keep them from swelling. After Dazzle had been put back into his stall I went into the feed room and mixed all the feed for everyone's dinner. And, of course, Dazzle got an extra ration of sweet feed for his hard work.
