Hi Rob, glad to hear that you are giving it your all!

Your question is not only about the Russians. Here are
a few suggestions:

Especially on the attack, spread your forces out so that
no enemy attack can put the hurt on more than one of your
squads. Related to this: Only stack multiple squads
with a leader (for firing with the leader's DRM) if you
are in cover, +2 at least is best. Next, don't "move in
the open" unless you are trying to draw fire so other
folks won't get fired at ... in other words, do your best
to ADVANCE into open ground.

As for the Russians; your strengths are usually (1) lots
of squads, (2) good firepower only when close, and (3) the
"ability" to go berserk.

To take advantage of these, spread out into lots of hexes
for #1, do your best to manuever in close for #2, and for
#3 ... make sure that every berserk squad helps all the
rest of your troops in their efforts to advance.

Maybe that'll be enough to start the thought processes?

All the best, Alan Yngve
