Sorry for the delayed answer, must have missed it. :-(

Quick answer: Yes.

Longer: When you declare your MG fire you must select the
target hex that is used for determining penetration (rule
17.5), one can then identify/specify the penetration hexes.

Now the squad may (but does not have to) also fire at one of
those MG target hexes [exception: COD early-war restrictions]
and if it does the firepower is combined and resolved with
one dice roll, per rule 8.5. There is no rule that states
that the squad firing the MG must fire at the target hex
selected to determine penetration LOS.
