The Good, The Bad and The Ugly #43

THE GOOD

Everybody Dies - Like tough crime fiction? Read Lawrence Bock.

The Cherry Family - Yet more proof of musical talent being genetic is this disgustingly brilliant family. Don Cherry is most certainly one of the Jazz greats. Daughter Neneh pushed female hip-hop out into the world and has, we feel, one of the best voices out there. Our rediscovery of her 'Homebrew' album in the basement led to all of this as well. Then of course there is brother Eagle-Eye who is making a name for himself right now and whose latest album has just been released. One Family, three very different talents and we like 'em all.

Crystal - 'cause she's the best!!!!!

Your Boyfriends Back in Town - Happy faces at GBU HQ after picking up the new EP by Sydney boy Bernie Hayes. Bernie makes some of the saddest and best written songs on the planet. Needless to say we like him lots.

The Brand Spanking New Coffee Table Book Site - Pretty, very pretty.

Ratti - Once again doing the amazing and making it look simple by picking everything up, shifting it across and making it look even better in the process.

Walk on Fire - The last CD from The Royal Crown Review is a rockin', swingin', bumpin' and grinin' classic that makes you want to dance away the entire night. Our favorite bit? Every time the horns kick in.

Chasing Amy: Criterion Collection DVD - One of the favorite films at GBU HQ is now available in this packed collection with one of the funniest commentary tracks ever included on a DVD.

Bringing out the Dead - We mentioned this a few weeks back, but now that it has at last opened in the country we thought we should give it another quick plug. Martin Scorcese, Nic Cage, John Goodman, Ving Rahmes and one of those Arquette girls all get together make a very kinetic piece of cinema that like a emu with it's head chopped up just keeps kicking.

THE BAD

Nancy M. Lang - Miss Lang was pulled over earlier this week after an Ohio Police officer noticed her driving was somewhat erratic. When asked why she was driving in such a manner Miss Lang told the officer "Please give me a break, I'm Drunk". Needless to say she was booked for DUI but not after she had done a few cartwheels to show the officer she wasn't that drunk. Miss Lang was also booked for driving with a suspended license, driving with expired registration and was remanded on the use of gymnastics in a court of Law.

No more 'Cure' for what ails us - The band we listen to when we feel bad 'The Cure' are calling it quits, again. Are we really supposed to believe Robert Smith when he tells us the latest album 'Bloodflowers' is to be the last? I mean he's only said this several times before. But just in case it is the end we thought we should let the world know and send you all to your CD collection so you can turn out the lights and cry yourself into the young hours of the morning.

Australian Guinness - Front page news across the nation this week was that Guinness would now be produced in Australia. Knowing GBU HQ's love of this fine beer we guess many of you are wondering why it is announced in the bad column. Well this is why. In order to appeal more to the Australian palate those absolute idiots in charge have decreed that thew local Guinness will be lighter in body and less bitter in taste. Well fuck all of you too. We like Guinness the way it is thank you very much. Who do you think we are? Pathetic Americans?

The Sign-Language Shooting - A story out of Fort Worth, Texas this week mentioned how a 16 year old boy was shot in the chest by gang members after they mistook his deaf cousins sign language for threatening gang signs. The Boy said a gang member got out of a car they were walking toward and fired a single shot. The story was big news in the states and Texas Cops were investigating until a little while ago when the real story came out. Seems the boys were playing with a gun when one shot the other. The deaf boy is now being held under charges of aggravated assault. The boys say they fabricated the story because they were afraid of what may have happened had they told the truth.

The death of William C. Killgallon - Old Bill took over the Ohio Art Co. just as it was preparing to market it's latest vision - The DoodleMaster Magic Screen. Killgallon thought this was a bit of a mouthful, so he went in search of another name. Yep you guessed it Etch A Sketch. The company to date has sold 100 million of the damn things since then and continue to do so in the original factory in Ohio.

Police in Albany, NY shoot Tourist - Police in Albany shot and killed a Tourist this week after residents became worried and panicked. So what if the Tourist was a 400 pound bear we think it was a little harsh to shoot the poor guy. After all he just wanted what most other East Coasters are after, a decent bagel.

THE UGLY

Shane Warne - We don't discredit the man's talent, however we think The Weekend Australian summed it up best this week with the headline "Naïve and Stupid".

Water Skiing at Big Lake, Texas - Why? Because their ain't no lake in Big Lake, just a big dirt pan on the outskirts of town.

Saying goodbye to people you love - GBU HQ has been on the road this week, catching up with old friends. We want to send out love to you all and a big hug and a "Catch you later, cos we will be back".
