We aren't Zulus, the standard fare of european armies on the dark ages was the throwing spear, shield, and sword. Tommy built a shield, so at least he won't get shot. It's heavier than expected, as heavy as mine with a punch grip, making it hard to use. I think you just need practice, are you doing any archery? Archers still kick ass, and we have more of them than any other unit, too bad we don't have the gear to field them. A few light shieldmen, with archer support could be trouble if we get around back. Javelins kick ass, because you can carry a few of them, they pierce armor, are light, can be taken from the field, can hit the head, are easy to make and repair, as long as somebody doesn't hack them with a battle axe, can strike from a distance, can be used to parry and stab with, and let you use other weapons afterwards. They don't require a bow to be launched, and can be dropped in an instant. The problem with mixed forces is that Chronos goes out to break a shield, and gets cut in two, then you go after the same guy, and he deals a wrap to your back, then jumps the archer, and by now we're all dead. If there was a line of three shieldmen, we could at least form a line and keep from getting picked off. By mixing it up, we have one person that will get shot, another who is too slow to keep up, another who can get picked off. If we are all fast, then we can run. If we all have shields, we can stay and fight. If we all have reds, we can break shields, and if we are all archers we can get on both sides, one of us has to hit somebody's back. But right now, one good shieldman could tear us up. The light archer either runs to get picked off, or jumped. Without any strengths, we are weak. It would be different if we could fight like the other units, with a spear hedge like the kutriguri, or a shield wall like gg and rome. But as it is, we have to outrun the walls, and try to deal damage from a distance, while not getting picked off. The spears make us light and deadly, the shields keep the spears and arrows from getting us. Of course, you'll keep the sword on you. And even if you can't throw, you can carry one, and give it to someone who can after they use theirs.
Now for something completely different: I changed the cover on my shield, grey with a green stormwind mark. Do you want the mark on you shield? Should I hold onto your sword till you get back? If you aren't doing anything (you say you have a crapload to do, but that you're also bored, so i'm not sure) can you make some extra garb for jay? Would you pay for it Jay? Should we charge dues, then buy communal weapons? Does anybody want to pay? If I were to buy leather in bulk, would you guys want armor? Can I mail your mom 10$, or will she not kill me? Where is Amy? And those sashes too. I thought we could arrange an awards system, and sew beads of different colors to the sash, to show weapons expertise, command, wounds taken, etc. We need personas, check the page, and you'll see you have a personal page with a cheesy pic and a lot of space.
