Subject: ALL MEMBERS READ

An answer to organization- I'mprobably joining Greymael in his new unit. Read this:
Below is our press release. The Guard is my new unit...it includes some of the
UM Markland Tuesday night fighters (John Roop, Jeff Masiello, Rob McGinnis, Jenn
Glover). Our roster is up to about 30, including non-fighters. About half are
chicks.

We made our debut at the last war, fielding me, two Sgts, and three of THE
SORRIEST EXCUSE FOR RECRUITS I'VE EVER SEEN (running joke in the Unit). Plus we
picked up three mercs. Then we won the first Unit battle, against a TOUGH field
of veteran units. We felt pretty good after that.

If you can ever make it up for practice, we'll loan you weapons. I'm working
very hard to see the Aratari grow back to what it once was, back when we had 150
fighters at most battles. We had 60 last week, in the middle of winter!

Mark your calendar for the Tourney on 2/17. The Guard will be running a tavern.
LOTS OF PRETTY WOMEN.

Announcing a new Dagorhir Aratari Unit:

The Guard

Like any good military force in these days of cultural diversity, the Guard
welcomes members from any nation, race, religion, or species; male or female;
Dwarf, Elf, Troll, or even Human; from fiction, history, mythology, or your
imagination

The Guard is primarily a fighting group, but there¡¦s plenty of roles for
non-fighters that want to participate in events. Just like in a real military
company, non-fighters play a critical role in logistics and morale. We have
traveling tavern called the Wheel and Rose that accompanies us to most events.
If you want to play, the rest of the group will accommodate your niche. Our
ranks include barbarians, barmaids, a troll, singers, musicians, a shaman named
Mad Wolf, and a Sergeant called Mom.

What is required in the Guard?
- Good characterization.
- Good costuming (by the time someone has been in the Unit for 6 months).
- Impeccable sportsmanship. Sportswomanship. Sportspersonship.
(Wait ¡V is that term offensive to goblins and trolls?)

Nothing in the Guard is draconian or even pushy, EXCEPT for the requirement for
absolute sportsentityship at all times. If one of us gets a reputation as a
cheater, it hurts all our reputations.

The only uniform requirement is the Guard Tabard, an overtunic (dark blue and
grey) which will be issued to each member when they pass from the rank of
Recruit to Guard. Members are encouraged to decorate their Tabards with J¡¦tai
(Dagorhir medals), favors, marks of rank, and other appropriate salad.

The goal of the Guard is to have fun and encourage characterization in Dagorhir,
by making characterization ¡§cool¡¨ again. We are a group of friends who fight,
practice, make equipment, and joke together. The Guard is known for excellent
characterization; constantly wisecracks at each others¡¦ (and their own) expense;
and for acquitting themselves on the field with ferocity and unquestionable
sportsmanship.

And having a lot of fun doing it.

The starting vision for the Guard is based in part on the City Watch of Terry
Pratchett¡¦s ¡§Discworld¡¨ books, particularly ¡§Guards! Guards!¡¨ and ¡§Men at Arms:¡¨

¡§They may be called the Palace Guard, the City Watch, or the Patrol. Whatever
the name, their purpose in any work of heroic fantasy is identical: it is, round
about Chapter Three (or ten minutes into the film) to rush into the room, attack
the hero one at a time, and be slaughtered. No one ever asks them if they
wanted to. This book is dedicated to those fine men.¡¨ ¡V the introduction to
Terry Pratchett¡¦s ¡§Guards! Guards!¡¨

That¡¦s ONE vision. Each Guard is encouraged to add their own flavor to the
Unit: make sure you get what you want out of the group and the game.

BATTLE STANDARD - DANTE

The symbol of the Guard is the Skeleton in Armor; we affectionately call him
Dante, although the reason why is lost in antiquity. Below Dante¡¦s feet is our
name, the Guard. In this game, everyone dies. The more you play, the more you
die. Over Dante¡¦s head is our motto, Decidi Temptabundus: Die Trying.

RANK

Rank in the Guard is a matter of fun and characterization, and determining who
has the pain-in-the-ass responsibility for leading the unit or sub-elements of
the Unit in combat. No one is REQUIRED to salute, kowtow, or otherwise suck up
to ¡§higher-ranking officers.¡¨ THIS IS JUST A GAME. Make it your game, and
make it fun.

Rank in the Guard is based on time in service and recruitment of new meat...er,
MEMBERS of the Unit.

Rank is awarded based on direct and indirect recruiting: If you recruit one
member, and that person in turn recruits a member, you are credited with
recruiting two members, and rise to the rank of Corporal.

„h Recruit - Probationary member who¡¦s attended fewer than three Dagorhir
events with the Guard. This can include mercenaries who just fight with the
Guard occasionally. A Recruit¡¦s application for Service may be terminated due to
Conduct Unbecoming a Guard, including but not limited to Cheating, Whining, and
Public Sobriety.
„h Guard - Member who¡¦s participated in at least three Dagorhir events
with the Guard; when a Recruit comes to his/her third event, they receive their
Tabard and may then decorate their equipment with Dante¡¦s image.
„h Corporal - Recruited at least 2 Guards. Wears a hash-mark on their
Tabard.
„h Sergeant - Recruited at least 5 Guards. Wears two hash-marks on
Tabard.
„h Lieutenant - Recruited at least 10 Guards. Receives an Officer¡¦s
short-sword, wears brass bar on shoulder of their tabard. May form a Command
with its own name, symbol, and motto.
„h Captain - Recruited at least 20 Guards. Wears two brass bars on
tabard.

Each time a member is promoted, they must note the date and rank of promotion in
The Book of the Guard, and they must enter a new Regulation into The Book.

AWARDS

Within the Unit, there are Awards which may be earned for Bravery,
Characterization, and other Contributions to the Guard. The original core group
of Guards will design the awards, name them, and decide criteria under which
they may be earned. The Guard may even decide to recognize outstanding people
from other Units with Guard Awards.

CHARACTERIZATION

The Guard is led by Captain Graymael, a war-weary old campaigner who¡¦s always
one month away from retirement. Come up with your own Schtick and weave it into
the tapestry of the rest of the group. Is your character the rabid Drill
Instructor, or the crazy young recruit? Are you the Corporal who refuses the
promotion to Sergeant because you just don¡¦t want the responsibility? Are you a
reformed thief who¡¦s serving in the Guard to fulfill the Community Service
portion of her sentence? Or the Sergeant who¡¦s been in the Guard so long that
you named your child Dante?

BATTLES, PRACTICES & RECRUITING

In addition to having fun and setting a high standard of characterization, we
are a fighting Company. You don¡¦t have to be a great fighter to be in The
Guard, but you do have to support the Unit. We hold weekly battle practices to
increase technical ability and battlefield survival skills (besides, practices
are FUN!).

The Dagorhir National War, Ragnarok, has grown to last more than a week in
length and field 400+ fighters. The Aratari (Washington, DC-area Dagorhir) plan
to make a BIG showing at Ragnarok XVI (Ohio, in June 2001), and the Guard will
be a big part of that.

APPLICATION

- Dagorhir Name
