In reply to: never learn 's message, "shame we ran off so many good girls before they aged out" on 10:36:21 10/30/09 Fri

Sometimes you just get tired of hearing the same old song year after year, pageant after pageant. Accept this: There can ONLY be one person crowned each year and there will ALWAYS be people that don’t like her. There will always be people who say she was handpicked. There will always be people who say she shouldn’t have won (or in many cases, she shouldn’t have one, since their grammar is usually subpar). There will always be people who criticize the winner and the state staff, judges, other local directors. There are always those who complain. There will ALWAYS be unsubstantiated reasons why she should not have been chosen.
I have spoken to many of those contestants who have various reasons for the decisions they have made. Consistently, one of the reasons is all the backlash they read on this board. Even though they are told to stay away, people do not and are pushed away from competition because of the unfounded opinions (and I said opinions because MOST of the conversations are not factual). So, when you want reasons why people don’t compete, the first is you. You who hide behind the anonymous postings and spew the vile as if it were true. Some of you are contestants, some are directors and some are parents. Just know that you are hurting YOUR contestants, your program about which you claim to care and the directors who spend lots of money and time to help in continue. Just remember that.

because I've spoken to contestants who stopped competing before they aged out and the voy board was never mentioned in their reasons for not coming back. Now politics played a big part and was one of the top reasons I was always given. Guess we talked to different girls.

Girls come and go in pageantry. Some do it only once or twice and move on. I think there are alot of girls out there, some are just waiting until next year to compete because they are waiting til they are a little older.
Lets be happy for those that have moved on and know that for every girl that is not doing it there are those out there that want to they are just waiting.
Nothing wrong with moving on with life, you cant be a pageant girl forever.

and I agree with other poster - it's perceived politics

last year's top 10, the year before's were cited. 1/2 should not have been in and 1/2 of top five should not have been in top 5 of the 10. We lost many two years ago and more this past year. We're going to be losing directors next because they can't get girls, especially competitive ones. It's the truth even if you want to stick your head in the sand.

I beg to differ with you. Numbers are down in almost all states, don't try to make the lack of contestants an issue only in Tennessee because of percieved politics. How about also taking into account the choice of other pageants to compete in, arts being cut from schools therefore there is often not a place to recognize talent and cultivate it, the economy-and pageant competition is not cheap.

Politics may be a slight issue, but it's only a minor problem.

Also, I think that pageant in general carry an (unfair) stigma, so girls are often embarassed to participate. And face it folks, Miss America just ain't what she used to be.
