Subject: a new synch

Hello,

I think I have found a new synchronicity. This one is between Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day and Pink Floyd’s A saucerful of secrets (the album).
(for the last part, there is also a good alternative synch, but I will explain this one at the end)

First of all, I would like to apologise, because I don’t speak English fluently... But if you need this explanation in a perfect French, just ask me !

This synch may seem complicated, but if you refer to a Golden Rule, there should be easy.
This Golden Rule is that the whole thing is based upon a recurrence, a “key synch” : the sentence “Then at last the mighty ship descending on a point of flame made contact with the human race at no time…” (in the song Let there be more light) has to be heard each time the very “mighty ship” appears in a spectacular way, as it was the first time we see it. That is :
1/When we see the mother ship near the moon
2/When one of the “secondary ships” goes out the fire cloud near New York
3/When the squad of planes that are supposed to strike back near the ruins of Los Angeles see their target
4/When we see the target of the stealth bombers near Houston
5/And finally when the first missile explodes on the shieldless alien ship near the 51 zone, due to president Bill Pullman... As a revenge for mankind, this one ends the cycle. After this, only A saucerful of secrets has to be played just after Let there be more light. The reason of this exception is obvious : the last scenes are the climax of the film. So, they can only be synchronized with the two most spectacular songs.
It’s thanks to this reminiscent key synch that I have discovered the whole synch.

So if you are lost during the synchronicity, the Golden Rule might help you. As a mark, this sentence appears at 1’45 in the song. This Rule has an advantage on other synchs : it avoids large gaps during the movie, thanks to these kinds of resets.

In order to be clear, when I write A saucerful of secrets, I mean, obviously, the track, not the album…

The album may be played several times during the movie. But il will never be played entirely. Actually, See Saw and Jugband Blues will never be played… sorry for Rick and Syd :(
Each time the album will be restarted, it will be with no interruption until notified. Except the last time, when only Let there be more light and A saucerful of secrets have to be played, with no interruption between them.
Generally, only the Let there be more light and A saucerful of secrets parts seem to bee really synchronized, but there are no fundamental incompatibilities with the other songs.

A piece of advice : forget your neighbours, and put the sound very loud, especially each time A saucerful of secrets is played.

First play : you have to start the album at the beginning of the credits, just in the dark when the Fox logo has disappeared. You will notice, as a clue that this synch may not be just a coincidence, that from the very beginning of the credits to the appearance of the ship, there is exactly 1’45…
Play the album until Corporal Clegg.

BUT…

Don’t play this last song entirely. You must re-play Let there be more light when the kids go out the caravan. They see the fire cloud… Just when you see this fire cloud, play Let there be more light.
If everything is OK, you might be able to enjoy the show until the end of A saucerful of secrets… which, I think, is the peak of the synch.
This is really one of the best parts of the synch. If you imagine that the “Celestial voices” part of A saucerful of secrets is here renamed “The survivor’s lament” or something like that, you may enjoy it better.
In this part, the transition is almost perfect. You don’t have to take a scene of the film as a mark, it’s the music that leads the change : just pause the movie at the very end of A saucerful of secrets, and re-play once again the album from Let there be more light This time, no need to cut the end of a track. There is exactly 1’45 between the end of A saucerful of secrets and “Then at last the mighty ship…”, just when the pilots see the ship.
This time, once Let there be more light is over, the synch is not as good. It might goes on, more or less, until a new play of A saucerful of secrets, but this is the least interesting part of the synch… But it’s also the least interesting part of the movie, so it’s OK… ;) This time, the last part of A saucerful of secrets could be renamed “the nuclear sacrifice”.
Before the end of A saucerful of secrets, you must re-play Let there be more light. That is just after the first alcoholic crisis of Jeff Goldblum, when his wife goes out the room. You may find it easier advancing the movie until the stealth bombers see the ship “really” (that is, not on screens), and then to go back of 1’45.
This part is also very good, especially A saucerful of secrets. Unfortunately, this track has to be cut :
When you see on Jeff Goldblum’s computer “Negociating with host” the third time, just before “On line with host”, play once again Let there be more light. Remember it can be easier to take the first missile explosion on the shieldless ship as a mark, and begin this part 1’45 before.
This time, once again, it’s the music that leads the next change : as soon as Let there be more light is over, re-play A saucerful of secrets.
This should end the synch…

In a clear way :

1/From beginnig to the fire cloud near the caravans : from Let there be more light to incomplete Corporal Clegg.
2/From the fire cloud to the end of the brieffing with Will Smith and Harry Connick Jr : from Let there be more light to complete A saucerful of secrets.
3/From this brieffing to first Jeff Goldblum’s crisis (when his wife goes out the room) : from Let there be more light to incomplete A saucerful of secrets.
4/From Jeff’s crisis to third “negociating with host” on his computer : from Let there be more light to incomplete A saucerful of secrets.
5/From these words on the computer to Pullman’s missile (the one that fails in destroying the main alien weapon) (but no matter, just take the end of the track as a mark) : complete Let there be more light.
6/From this missile to the end : A saucerful of secrets.

PS : As I said, there is an alternative synch for the end… a really good one. Roland Emmerich himself seems to give us two clues for this one.
Fist clue : you see on Jeff Goldblum’s computer the eye of Hal 9000… that reminds another famous synch…
Second clue : the time remaining between the appearance of this familiar eye and the end of the movie is almost exactly 23’31…
You really want me to give you a third clue ? OK, then… ping…
