I finally got through the endangered animals scenario after a dozen tries! I got some information on another sight that helped a lot
1. The higher your entrance price, the happier the visitors are, and you also don't get too many, which tends to make the zoo crowded and dirty. I started at $35, and went up and down during the scenario a couple of times to keep enough people coming in to keep the income up.
2. build a good exhibit for your endangered species (remember for foliage, to put them close together), then build one or two more the same (i.e. 3 okapi exhibits), to increase your chances for babies
3. Make the entry walk nice and wide, line with flowers or something decorative, to make the guests happy right away. If they start out happy, they tend to stay happy.

these seemed to work for me. now I just have to figure the cats scenario, and I can move on!
