This posting describes how to fix invisible objects with APE under Windows 98.
You'll need the (excellent) tutorial at http://www.god-games.com/zoo_tycoon/editing_invisibility.html
But that's not the whole story...

First, launch APE, and create your object, as described in the documentation which accompanies APE. You can use ordinary .BMP images.
Then try to load the new object in ZT: the object will be invisible.
Now fix idle.ani in the .ZTD ZIP file as described by god-games.com in their tutorial.
http://www.god-games.com/zoo_tycoon/editing_invisibility.html
Be very careful not to corrupt the path name when you get the file out of the .ZTD file.
(I.e. make sure "use directory names" is selected when you unzip the file).
Note that if you immediately try again to load it in ZT - it will STILL be invisible.
So, reload the hacked .ZTD file into APE, and change something small (e.g. the price), then re-save it as a different .ZTD file.
Now load the new file into ZT, and the object should finally be visible.
After it's working, you can edit the object many times with APE and it will remain visible.

General tips:
Once the invisibility is fixed, APE works fine under Windows 98.
Like any Windows application, APE will crash REGULARLY. So make sure you save your work even more regularly.

Have fun!!
