Subject: missing animals

 I have just installed zoo tycoon on my computer. According to everything I've read, I should have 40 animals and lots of other objects I can use in my zoos. When I start any of the freeform zoos, I only get 8 animals and four buildings. Do I have to reach a certain level in the game for all of the options to be available, or is something wrong?
