On June 19, 2001, Sega released Sonic Adventure 2, probably one of the last Sonic games on a Sega-based system (Dreamcast). In it, we were treated to... well... Sonic and his friends for another go. Speeding through the stage, shooting lots of stuff, or finding Emerald pieces.
It was also here that we were introduced to Shadow. Just who was Shadow? Well... according to him, he was the "Ultimate Life Form" capable of... er, many things! Like running really fast and hitting bad guys with his spin attacks.
Um, just like Sonic.
Well, he can use "Chaos Control", which allows him to use a Chaos Emerald to warp through time and space.
Um, Sonic can also do that, and with a fake Emerald too.
Let's see, what sets Shadow different from his "Hero" counterpart?
Well, he's evil! No wait, he's just misunderstood! Yeah, that's it...
In some ways, Shadow is the anti-Sonic. At least personality-wise. Shadow is serious and just too focused on his goal. At least in Sonic Adventure 2 he was. Focused on what?
Revenge.
Sweet, cold revenge... on a dish.
Nummy.
Why? Well, if you saw everyone before you die in front of your eyes - including the Professor's caring granddaughter Maria - as you were being encapsulated for 50 years, you'd be pretty cheesed off too.
Of course, it's not everyday that revenge would turn into an overelaborate scheme to capture the Chaos Emeralds and use them to... ah, you finish it, I'm bitter!
So, long story short, Shadow finds out about what Maria really wanted him to promise, sees error in his ways, goes to help save the planet, blah blah blah.
Oh, and he dies in the end...
Or... DID HE?
Yes! No! Yes! No! Yes! No!
As you can see, it's a hot debate within the Sonic community. Did he or did he not die? If he is, then he is. If he's not, will he appear in the next Sonic game?
Well, that's up for Sega to decide. But, just today... just today... let us celebrate how one hedgehog stormed onto the Sonic community.

WHAT TO DO ON "SHADOW DAY":
(1) Buy all things Shadow-related. (Or Maria-related, just for kicks.)
(2) Rant about Shadow on message boards and other Internet groups! (When appropriate. I don't think a Star Trek Yahoo! Group will appreciate it.)
(3) Play Sonic Adventure 2 on either the Dreamcast or Gamecube. (I mean, duh.)
(4) Sacrifice a part of your meal to the Ultimate Life Form. (NO brussel sprouts.)
(5) And most importantly, just go nuts! Wheeeeeeeeeee! :)
