Darius listened intently to Gabriel’s story, and it seemed that someone, somehow had managed to follow the man with all the intentions of taking away the precious gem. The merc was equally impressed with the size of the gem, and realized immediately that, whoever had it, was trying valiantly to pawn it off for a large sum of money. Considering Gabriel’s comment about being a light sleeper only confirmed what the man had already stated, that someone must have drugged his food to insure the gem keeper a good night’s sleep, with no interruptions whatsoever, and the thief did just that. Darius was sure that by now the thief was long gone, or hiding in some unknown area waiting to be rid of the stone. The merc was also positive that if word got out that such a gem had been stolen, everyone, especially in Bizmar, would be after the gem, and the thief as well to get their fair share of any profits it would bring in.

Darius took a sip of his ale while he listened to the man’s story. He questioned Gabriel if he had noticed anything out of the ordinary, or if anyone had possibly been following him. When Gabriel shook his head, the merc realized that the thief in question was good at his trade, or Gabriel simply hadn’t bothered to pay attention to such detail. In any event, the gem was now missing, and Darius decided that he would help the man find the missing stone.

“Jo, and I will do what we can,” Darius stated. “However, not knowing who to look for can pose a very serious problem. The man could be anywhere by now. If not in Bizmar, he might be in any of the adjoining cities situated within the proximity of Bizmar. We need to get word out on the streets of Bizmar for starters to see what we can find. However, we need to know if anyone here spotted any shady looking characters. I’ll be right back.”

Darius stood up, and approached one of the urchins who was cleaning off one of the tables. He explained to the boy that the gentleman he was sitting with had lost something very valuable, and if possibly he had spotted someone watching the man, or possibly one of the other urchins. Whip simply shrugged his shoulders but stated he would ask the others. Darius smiled, and handed him a gold piece for his efforts. Judging by the smile on the youth’s face, he figured he would get something back on the deal.

He returned to his table, and suggested to Gabriel that they merely wait for a while, and to possibly have dinner. Gabriel ordered, and before the barmaid returned with his food, one of the urchin girls named Marla came running up to the table.

“There was this guy, and he sat at the corner table over there,” Marla stated while pointing to the corner of the room. “I remember this guy when he walked in, but about an hour later this skinny, creepy guy came in and sat down. He didn’t eat much but liked staring in this guys direction.”

Darius continued to ask questions, and finally had a vague description of the so-called thief. Based on the young girl’s description the man was probably about 5’7” tall, dark long stringy hair, and had a tattoo of an eagle emblazoned on his right arm. Darius thanked Marla, and handed her a gold piece for her troubles. She smiled, and went off quite content.

“We need to find someone who’s capable of getting information without drawing any attention,” Darius stated. He thought a bit as he looked a round the room. His first thoughts were of asking Ravin, or Erlic, but both men were occupied at the moment. Suddenly, out of the corner of his eye, he spotted Dash. He had witnessed Dash’s performance, especially when coupled with that of Scat. The two boys, and their contingency of youths who were out to tell Bizmar that they were the PTOB, Punks taking over Bizmar, had worked their magic in the past by obtaining valuable information about Tegol, and his informants. He managed to get the youth’s attention.

“Yeah, whattya want?” Dash replied as he shuffled his feet. “I got’s things I gotta take care of, can’t be waistin my time on little stuff, ya know?”

Darius had to smile at the youth’s incorrigible attitude. Based on experiences he had witnessed in the past, he realized that money talked, and that bulshit did absolutely nothing. “Here’s ten gold pieces,” Darius told the youth whose eyes immediately went wide.

“All right, so ya’s got my attention,” Dash replied. “Like whatta ya need?”

“Here’s the deal,” Darius began. “We need to find out who in Bizmar knows anything about a precious gem that was stolen, and is trying to sell it, or find a seller for it. You get me that information, and there’ll be another then gold pieces in it for you.” The merc went on to explain further the details of the stone. “I’d venture to say that this guy is probably hiding out somewhere, and we need to….pay him a visit if you get my drift.”

“Yeah, yeah,” Dash answered. “I got it. Now ya gonna talk some more, or can I be about me business? Time is money ya know.”

Darius merely nodded, and within the blink of an eye the youth was gone, probably gathering up his friends and heading out toward Bizmar.

“You’re gonna trust a punk kid like that to get information?” Gabriel questions. “Seems to me I might just as well get it over with, and tell my boss what happened.”

“Don’t let the boy’s age fool you,” Darius answered. “He, and his cohorts have managed to dig up information in the past that others simply couldn’t attain. He’ll come back with something. All we have to do now is wait.”
