A great read from an artist with the right idea, at least in my opinion. Janis Ian, you can visit her at www.janisian.com.

This burns me up. This is why the record industry is evil, why people hate them. Charging royalties on sales of used CDs? What's next, them coming to your house and charging you for every time you listen to the CDs you already bought?

A great article defending Lawrence Lessig's book The Future Of The Commons, along with the link to the editorial criticizing Lessig's views. Both are good reading. Always important to remember there are many sides to any issue, although obviously this site is biased in favor of less strict copyright (not no copyright). I still think Lessig is the most "with it," but the defense editorial was a very interesting read....

For an informative look into MusicNet, one of the music industry's authorized online services. Interesting points on why this service failed in its 1.0 incarnation, and some talk about 2.0 (realistically, not that much different, at least from this consumer's perspective).

peace!!

Here's a good story about some rather shady things the company that makes the file-sharing program Morpheus does. This kind of thing seems rather prevalent sometimes in the admittedly shady world of file trading.

From reading what he's had to say on the subject, VA Rep. Rick Boucher seems to have a good grasp on the issue of copyright and control that Stanford Law prof. Lawrence Lessig writes about... how about that, a politician with a clue. Check out this article for more about Rep. Boucher.

Two contradictory opinions on whether or not there is a digital divide:

http://slashdot.org/features/02/03/08/1626223.shtml?tid=126

I have to say, it does seem like there is a divide to me, just like there's a divide between rich and poor. And they both seem to be getting wider rather than narrower, at least in my opinion. Still, interesting reading...

AOL Time Warner is trying to come up with Copyright Protected CDs. Couple articles out there on this today, above is the ZDNet article, but also one on news.com and might be one on Wired News. Personally I'm big into ripping my CDs to .mp3, have a car CD player that takes .mp3 format tracks; it's great not to have to switch CDs on a 5 hour car drive.

May not have much impact on those of us doing synch websites, but I thought it was interesting nonetheless...

The L.A. Times has an article on the ongoing battle over webcasting licensing fees between the RIAA (boo!) and webcasters. An independent arbitration committee suggested guidelines, and both parties are fighting the compromise. The RIAA wants higher (when don't they?) and the webcasters want it lower. Companies that previously negotiated with the RIAA for webcasting fees are mostly out of business, so it seems silly that they still want to charge high rates, what with this economy and all.

OK, have been doing a lot of updating to the site. Hopefully it hasn't caused anyone too much inconvenience. Here's a breakdown of what's been changed:
  • Streamlined the frames/noframes info so that I've only got 1 place to update for all of the text. That'll make updating a lot easier.
  • Added new News/Updates board (that's this one) to help streamline updates and information, plus to open it up to other people who want to share something that is more important than just a regular message board post. This also involved dumping the very bad and rarely updated news page that I used to have on the site.
  • Weeded out all dead links (I think). Pretty sure I got all of them, if you find one please let me know.
  • Updated some of the graphics and got rid of some files that I was no longer using.
  • Changed the directory structure of the site a bit. This may end up being in preparation to move servers, I'm not sure yet.
  • Restored poll to the site. Currently on the welcome page, I'm still playing with where that should go.
  • Changed interactivity section to a direct link to the message board.
I think that was it for today. Again, if people have ideas or things they'd like to see, I'm very open to feedback. I know the site has been kind of static for a long time, but hopefully it is now on the road to recovery.

Anyone not familiar with the writings of Lawrence Lessig is definitely missing out. Lessig writes very insightful commentary on the nature of copyright and culture and the increasing control that corporations are exercising over our society. His latest article, Control and Creativity: The Future Of Ideas Is In The Balance, is quite good. Recommended reading for anyone concerned about this topic.
