When I first got my horse she was so fat the girth wouldn't fit and I just exercised her more often. A little ride everyday instead of two big rides a week is better because it keeps their motabilism up higher, be careful when you do ride though, with to much weight on his joints he may put to much stress on them. I just trotted and walked until she lost some because cantering puts to much weight on one leg at one time to fast. It all depends on the horse though. How did he get so fat in the first place? Maybe you can use that to help prevent when he is lighter again.
