Because your horse knows she is stronger than you, she will constantly try to bully you around until she understands the ropes. You say she has been abused, so you should not try to stop her with any punishment. Instead you need to teach her to respect your space and accept you as her "lead horse". I highly respect round-pen methods and I think you should try it with your mare. My horse was also previously abused. I tried Monty Roberts' method on her and she's an angel now. Try researching his or John Lyons' method. See what you can find out and try. I would also suggest you get a more experienced person or trainer to help you train your pony.
