It wasn't completely matching DNA in any case, Mulder & Jeffrey, Emily & Melissa, etc. I looked up PCR scan online and didn't come up with an answer....but I found a CC/Emily fanfic...

What I'd always thought, and a little of what I found online about PCR computer software, suggests this: that they programmed the computers to filter out specific genes or something that they wanted to compare. Those they selected may be commonly matching in close releatives, and so it was convenient for xf writers to use!
